The internet has chosen its topic of the day, and apparently it’s Paul Mescal.
I’m always wary of hot takes, but I do enjoy the first draft of public opinion.
What I saw people linking to
- Will Jessie Buckley's winning streak continue at the Oscars? (BBC)
- Actor Awards: Sinners shakes up Oscars race as Jessie Buckley remains undefeated (Sky News)
- Jessie Buckley wins Actor Award for lead role in Hamnet (RTE.ie)
My first breadcrumb was ‘Will Jessie Buckley's winning streak continue at the Oscars?’, attributed to BBC.
Seeing those headlines helped me understand why Paul Mescal is trending today ‘ it’s not just random curiosity; it’s people trying to piece together the same moment from different angles.
My first thought was, ‘Is this serious or is it just the internet being the internet?’
If you want to peek at the trend card yourself, here’s the source link I started from: https://trends.google.com/trending/rss?geo=GB
What I’m trying to do (for my own sanity) is split the topic into three quick questions:
- What is it? (the plain-English version)
- Why do people care right now? (the ‘what just happened?’ angle)
- What does it say about the moment? (the vibe check)
Even without perfect answers, that little framework usually gets me from ‘huh?’ to ‘okay, I get it.’
I’ll step back and let the day unfold, but Paul Mescal is staying on my radar.

Sometimes a trend is a mirror: it reflects what we’re anxious about, excited about, or distracted by.
